I learned I had breast cancer on September 19, 2012. While I lived in fear of death during some of those early months, I knew I had so much more life to live and wanted to LIVE. I sought solace in my running and reaching out to family and friends. When my running was paused for surgeries and recovery, I turned to nature and dance for healing.
I'm no stranger to spending time in the outdoors. Nature was a source of inspiration in the early 80's with an epic hitchhiking trek cross-country with a backpack and a dear friend. That experience alone set the course of my life for the outdoor/wilderness field, self-exploration, personal growth and healing. The bond of relationships built through experiences in nature are often the strongest, lasting a life time. Through muscle movement, journal writing and photography, my perseverance, humility and courage helped me to connect to a source in nature much greater than me.
Dance has been in my bones since my childhood. I began ballet, jazz and tap at the age of 8 and was a member of a dance company throughout my school years, dancing for recitals, competition and community theatre. I'm known for being the first one on the dance floor moving to a variety of music: swing, Texas 2-step, reggae, 70's and 80's music, funk and more. It's the joy I've found through dance that led me to Shake Your Soul® Yoga Dance at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, where I pursued instructor certification. This has been a source of healing for me over the past 7 months and I now want to share it with you.
And so it goes...Barefoot Souls® was born.
